Grievances are concerns, problems or complaints raised by a member of staff regarding their employment.

Examples of grievances include:-

1. Terms and Conditions of Employment
2. Health and Safety
3. Work Relations
4. Bullying and Harassment
5. New Practices/Organisational Changes
6. Discrimination

It is best for employers to try and deal with any potential grievances quickly and informally.  However, many organisations do have grievance procedures in place to enable employees to raise these issues.  By instigating a formal grievance procedure, employers can give reasonable consideration to any issues which cannot be resolved and deal with them fairly and consistently.

The procedure will normally follow ACAS’s recommendation -

1. An employee should raise their grievance promptly and in writing.
2. Any employer should carry out a proper investigation i.e. they should collect any relevant documents,  identify witnesses to interview and take statements as soon as possible.
3. A grievance hearing can be scheduled without unreasonable delay and can be attended by both the  employer and employee.  An employee can take a colleague or a trade union representative to the  meeting.

The purpose of the grievance hearing will be for the employer to establish the facts and decide whether or not to uphold that grievance.  At the conclusion of the grievance hearing, a decision should be made upon appropriate action and the employee should be notified of the decision and advised on any appeal rights.

For employers we provide a range of support and advice to ensure that you understand your responsibilities in following the ACAS Grievance Procedures including how to investigate the complaints.  We can also train your managers to ensure they handle grievances correctly from the outset to avoid problems.

For employees we can help you put forward your grievance correctly in accordance with the procedure and advise upon how your employer has dealt with a grievance once it has been completed.
